John Arthur Flats

Pride in housing equity.

The first LEED Gold certified LGBTQ+ friendly affordable senior housing in Cincinnati.

Problem

Cincinnati faced a critical need for affordable, inclusive housing designed to support the senior LGBTQ+ community, who often encounter discrimination and social isolation in traditional housing settings. At the same time, there was a growing demand for developments that prioritize sustainability and energy efficiency, particularly for low-income residents. The challenge was to create a housing solution that not only fosters a sense of belonging and safety but also meets high sustainability standards—all while navigating budget limitations and integrating into the existing fabric of the neighborhood. The building is named after Cincinnatian John Arthur, husband of Jim Obergefell, whose historic case led to the legalization of same-sex marriage in the U.S. Partnering with LGBTQ+ advocates like Jim Obergefell allowed John Arthur Flats to meet the unique needs of LGBTQ+ seniors.

Solution

Supportive Spaces

At the core of John Arthur Flats is the Maureen Wood Community Room, a tribute honoring the Northside pioneer and LGBTQ+ advocate. Featuring a stunning mural by Maureen's friend, local artist Ursula Roma, this welcoming space is the heartbeat of the building, inviting residents to connect, learn, and uplift one another in a supportive community.

Wellness at Home

Residents of the community have access to a variety of essential on-site services in the wellness suite. These services are provided by the Council on Aging, Pennrose Management, Churches Active in Northside, and Caracole. They include healthcare, social services, support tailored to individuals living with HIV/AIDS, and transportation assistance.

Community Resilience

Low-emitting materials and tested ventilation ensure exceptional indoor air quality for senior residents. High-performance HVAC, energy-efficient appliances, and WaterSense fixtures work in synergy to keep utility costs low, while locally sourced and recycled materials support the local economy and reduce the carbon footprint.
