Pride in housing equity.
The first LEED Gold certified LGBTQ+ friendly affordable senior housing in Cincinnati.
Problem
Cincinnati faced a critical need for affordable, inclusive housing designed to support the senior LGBTQ+ community, who often encounter discrimination and social isolation in traditional housing settings. At the same time, there was a growing demand for developments that prioritize sustainability and energy efficiency, particularly for low-income residents. The challenge was to create a housing solution that not only fosters a sense of belonging and safety but also meets high sustainability standards—all while navigating budget limitations and integrating into the existing fabric of the neighborhood. The building is named after Cincinnatian John Arthur, husband of Jim Obergefell, whose historic case led to the legalization of same-sex marriage in the U.S. Partnering with LGBTQ+ advocates like Jim Obergefell allowed John Arthur Flats to meet the unique needs of LGBTQ+ seniors.
