Seeing a Home Through the Trees

This award-winning home in the woods makes an asset of a challenging site.

Problem

The homeowners found an infill lot in their ideal neighborhood—but it had a steep terrain and a forest of mature trees that they and the neighborhood hoped to preserve. Our challenge was to envision how the site could benefit and enhance the home—and not simply be viewed as an obstacle. We wanted to respond sensitively to the site, and achieve the owners' vision of a warm, inviting, energy efficient home—all while cost-effectively achieving LEED Gold certification.

Solution

Use the site as a guide.

The house was carefully located to preserve existing trees and minimize regrading. Nestled in the hillside, the home presents a low profile to the street, and opens up to views of the wooded hillside to the north. A three-story deck and screened porch provide living space amongst the trees.

Craft a warm, contemporary aesthetic.

A light-filled entry leads to an intimate living area. A corner office looks out onto the forest. An airy master suite opens to a private deck. Local and environmentally-friendly materials help to create a home that is at both inviting and contemporary, healthy and sustainable.

Prioritize passive design.

The home's compact form provides excellent energy performance on a budget. Generous ceilings and plentiful natural light reduce electric lighting needs. An efficient envelope with advanced framing and continuous insulation keeps the house comfortable year-round.
