LEED Platinum Alscher-Hancock Residence Wins SES Awards

The LEED Platinum Alscher-Hancock Residence took home not one, but two Sustainability and Energy Smart (SES) Awards, presented by USGBC Ohio.

The home was designed by the owners, two retired architects, and certified by Sol Design + Consulting, which provided sustainability consulting, energy modeling, and certification services. The design process began with the simple goals of making the home energy efficient, healthy, durable, and low maintenance—goals that aligned naturally with sustainable design strategies, and led to LEED-Platinum certification.

Sustainable features of the home include: a small home size, a high-efficiency geothermal HVAC system, photovoltaic solar panels, a well-insulated and super tight envelope, high-efficiency water heating, LED lighting, and ENERGY STAR appliances. The average energy bill of this home is $79/month with an average monthly consumption of 0.09 kWh/sf.

The project took home two awards:

• Sustainable Project Owner – Residential: This award honors the owner of a sustainably built work, addressing the overall sustainability of the building, interior, landscape, and building systems (including mechanical, renewable energy, electrical, plumbing, etc.). Owners Marcia Alscher and John Hancock (who also happen to be the architects) were honored for their comprehensive approach to their home, which addressed all of these aspects and more.
• Sustainability & Energy Project – New Construction Residential: This award honors the design team and owner of a sustainably built project that demonstrates outstanding leadership in energy efficiency. A combination of passive and active design strategies resulted in significant reductions in energy use.

In addition to these awards, Sanyog Rathod, President and CEO of Sol, was awarded a Community Sustainability Advocate Award for his work advancing and innovating in sustainable design over the past decade.
