Sol Earns Honorable Mention in Cincinnati's BuildReady Design Competition
Sol design + consulting earned an Honorable Mention for Sustainability in Cincinnati's BuildReady Design Competition.
The competition is part of the City's larger BuildReady program, which aims to create pre-approved missing middle infill housing designs, as part of a larger focus on affordable housing. Sol submitted proposals for 2-, 3-, and 4-family housing. Our proposals focused on three things:
- Passive House performance: We believe that cost-effective, super-efficient, and healthy design is critical for achieving long-term affordable, equity, and resilience in our housing stock. Passive House is the clear path toward those goals, and can readily be achieved with off-the-shelf materials and technologies.
- Contemporary urban infill: Drawing on our deep experience with contemporary design in historic neighborhoods, we believe that a contemporary approach adds character and vibrancy, allowing a neighborhood to evolve, while still fitting in in terms of massing, scale, setback, proportions, and materiality.
- Diversity of unit types: All of our designs provide a mix of unit types, with an emphasis on larger numbers of bedrooms rather than studio or single-bedroom apartments. This addresses a key need for affordable family housing.

This award builds on an earlier AIA CRAN award for Spring Green Townhomes -- which also a near-Passive House contemporary urban infill project.
