Sol Presents Passive House Principles at DesignColumbus

As part of the 2024 DesignColumbus Sustainable Building Education Day & Expo, Sanyog Rathod, the President and CEO of Sol design + consulting, and Carl Sterner, Vice President, Design and Sustainability, lead an educational session on the topic of Passive House principles. They explore three homes, two historic retrofits and one new construction. All three award-winning homes achieved LEED Platinum and Net Zero performance certifications by integrating Passive House principles.

This presentation reviews the fundamentals of Passive House design, and how these principles were implemented in three very different contexts: a townhome in a historic district (the Myers-Heckman Residence), the renovation of an existing non-heritage home (the Moothart Residence), and a new construction project in an infill site (the Iowa City Nest Residence). Passive houses are designed to supply most of their own energy needs, which reduces the home's ecological footprint.
